For watching the Sunrise, you want to wake up very early around 4:00 am because the sunrise in Andaman Island mostly occurs between 4:30 to 5:15 am. Chatham Saw Mill:

Chatham Island houses one of the oldest and largest saw mills in Asia. The island is connected to Haddo, Port Blair by a bridge and has the second-largest wharf of the islands. The sawmill is a storehouse of a variety of wood species. The sawmill was established in 1883 by the British to meet all the local timber requirements. The museum in the mill compound showcases various models and forest department activities in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Various timber mementos and decorative pieces made of famous Padauk wood and Gurjan etc. are available for sale. The sawmill is open to tourists from 9. am to 2.00 pm on all weekdays.

 

Viper Island

Long before the iconic cellular Jail was constructed Viper Island housed the notorious Jail “Viper Chain Gang Jail” constructed between 1864-67 (supervision of Col. Ford). The Jail was home to the convicts considered most dangerous. The convicts were kept in fetters and were forced to work within those fetters on. The ruins of this two-storeyed building jail and gallows are still seen on Viper island. The island is situated within a 20-minute boat journey from Phoenix Bay or Junglighat Jetty at Port Blair. The Island derived its name from a cutter vessel Viper which met with an accident and sank near this Island.

 

Mount Harriet

Mount Harriet is the second-highest peak in South Andaman offering a magnificent view. It is situated 55 km by road / 15 km by ferry. Trekking is available from Bambooflat to Mount Harriet. From Mount Harriet, a trail can be taken to reach Madhuban. Mount Harriet is a place for a variety of rare endemic birds, animals, and butterflies. Mount Harriet was the summer headquarters of the Commissioner during British Era. The location is named after Harriet Tytler. it is an ideal place for trekking, picnicking, and bird watching. A guest house maintained by the Forest Department is available for stay.

 

Lime Stone Cave, Baratang Island:

Approachable by Boat from Baratang Nilambur Jetty (20-25 minute). The boat takes around 5 and 10 people and cost Rs 600. per head (both ways). The boat ride is through thick mangrove forest. The cave is about a 1.5 km walk through a kaccha road but the comfortable journey. Different shapes are formed in rocks over the years. The wooden walkway made over the mangrove forest is very nice & charming.

 

Mud Volcano, Baratang Island:

Mud Volcano is approachable by road from Nilambur jetty and is mainly called Baratang jetty. One has to walkable the early morning and get ready to go to Baratang Island via Jarawa creek by vehicle. From Jarawa, Creek Mud volcano is at a walkable distance of about 300 meters. A mud volcano is created by natural gases emitted by decaying organic matter underground.

Mud is pushed upwards by the gas, it deposits and hardens above the ground. Mud Volcano is formed by mud oozes out and spills over the edge it grows in size, gradually forming a miniature volcano with a rich, creamy mud crater at the top. Mud Volcano is currently in a few places of the world of which many exist in the Andaman Islands in India.

 

 

Parrot Island, Baratang:

The sight of hundreds of parrots returning home before every sunset is an experience that draws nature lovers to Parrot island. Visiting this small island is an interesting escapade combining bird watching, boat rides through mangrove fringed coastline, and marveling at the enchanting sun setting behind the island.

Parrot Island is best viewed during sunrise or sunset when parrots come to roam around this Island. The Sunset view is amazing and as soon as the sun sets, hundreds of parrots came to the island. They keep flying around the island for about 10 minutes during the evening time. The boats for Parrot island leave before 4 pm and by that time there are no buses for Port Blair and you need to night’s stay at Baratang.
